Before
you purchase a bed
Testing
Do not hesitate to visit different stores to test and lie down on
a variety of beds. This is the only way to test the firmness or
softness of a mattress in combination with the bed base.
It is especially important to know what kind of mattress you have
used in the past. Depending on how well you have slept on your previous
bed, you may choose a firmer or softer mattress when purchasing
a new bed. Of course, a period of adaptation to a new mattress is
often necessary.
Something to consider when seeking the perfect combination: the
slat base and the mattress should work together. Combining elements
from different sources is not recommended. Obtaining the entire
bed from a single source is the only way to assure a good sleep
system.
Size
The standard measurement for a single bed is 100 x 200 cm. Individuals
taller than 185 cm require a longer bed. It is recommended that
a double bed be at least 160 cm wide.
The
slat base
By selecting a slat base and mattress that work together, you can
be sure that you have created an optimum sleep system. Additional
comfort can be obtained from features such as adjustable headrest,
backrest and footrest.
Bed
climate
If you tend to perspire heavily in bed, you will be especially comfortable
with a mattress that features ventilation channels, or with the
specialized Swiss innerspring mattress. You may consider a mattress
with a camel hair layer, as this natural insulator helps maintain
a comfortable temperature.
The
weight of the mattress
Any mattress, in any part of the world, should be turned over at
least once a week, flipping it from side to side one week and from
end to end the next. This maintains good hygiene, preventing the
accumulation of dust, moisture or microorganisms such as mites.
Swiss mattresses are designed to be lighter in weight than a standard
mattress for this reason. Two smaller mattresses are clearly easier
to turn than one large one, which is one of the reasons we recommend
separate mattresses on double beds.
Cost
To the extent possible, price should play a minor role when selecting
a sleep system, since obtaining a quality bed and accessories is
an investment in your health. A bed that is used every day should
always be fitted with a high quality mattress. It is especially
important for growing children to have a healthy, comfortable bed.
The
guarantee
The common practice of offering more than10 years of guarantee,
can create false expectations. The over 10-year guarantee originated
with the popularity of the innerspring mattress, was a guarantee
especifically against breakage of the steel springs. The life span
of a modern mattress depends mainly on the use and maintenance it
receives.
Confort Suizo provides a 10-year
durability guarantee on its bed bases and mattresses under normal
usage conditions, and two years for the motors of electric beds
and corded or wireless remote controls.
Ten years is plenty!
Hygiene
It
is generally recommended that all mattresses be replaced every seven
to ten years for hygienic reasons. Over that amount of time a mattress
has absorbed up to 3000 liters of perspiration and been saturated
with salts and impurities, some of which are retained and some expelled.
A good mattress will perform well for this amount of time, without
"caving in" or becoming bumpy or irregular.
For bacterial as well as hygienic reasons, it is not appropriate
for parents to pass their old mattresses on to their children. Furthermore,
because a child's skeletal structure is not yet fully developed,
it is relatively malleable and more easily damaged. Old mattresses
are very often the cause of this damage.
